From Tools to Transformation: How AI Supports Personal and Professional Growth
Why is it that, even when a tool like AI promises to make life easier, so many of us hesitate to embrace it? Perhaps it's because we fear losing the essence of who we are in the process—or worry we're taking a shortcut that robs us of growth. But what if making life easier gives us the space to focus on what truly brings us joy and meaning?
As an innovative tool, AI will always have its critics. Change and adaptation often meet hesitation. I, however, have always been a bit different. When things are done differently, I lean in with curiosity to discover the benefits and explore new ways of solving problems. Whether finding information, rethinking creative approaches, or optimizing processes, I've found AI to be an invaluable partner—particularly with tools like ChatGPT.
When people talk about AI, the concerns are varied, but three objections frequently arise:
1. The worry that work produced with AI isn't authentic.
2. A sense of things not being equal —"Why should they get to use a shortcut when I didn't have one?"
3. Fear that people won't develop critical skills or fully engage in the process of learning.
I'd like to address these concerns by sharing my experience using AI to assist with writing. My process typically begins with pen and paper, journaling my initial thoughts. Then, I type them out in Word before collaborating with ChatGPT. This final step often involves back-and-forth edits where I refine ideas, identify weaker areas, and ensure the tone feels authentic to me. I ask for feedback on specific strengths or weaknesses, using the suggestions to improve my current work and writing abilities.
This process allows me to feel both confident and authentic. AI can help bring out the most genuine parts of yourself, especially if you train it to understand your interests, values, and personality. I keep a close eye on the suggestions it generates, ensuring they align with who I am and stop any patterns that feel overused or one-dimensional. For instance, grammar has never been my strength, and despite taking multiple courses to improve, it just doesn't stick. I've accepted that I'm an idea person rather than a detail person, and AI helps me embrace this by handling tasks that I find less fulfilling while letting me focus on what I love: brainstorming and creativity.
Creating an authentic space
- whether through something handmade or using AI— your space can make the process feel genuine and true to who we are. Tools like AI aren’t about replacing our work but about enhancing our ability to focus on what we love and grow in meaningful ways.
Dr. Sean Wiebe recently posted on LinkedIn, "You can immediately improve your AI pedagogy by embedding it in a growth mindset. Explicitly design your activity to expand students' belief in themselves and what is possible. Ask for and expect high investment." This idea resonates with me. In a recent workshop, I emphasized how AI can be used in career planning and job searching, focusing on developing and maintaining critical thinking and ensuring the information feels authentic. Embedding AI in a growth mindset means understanding your strengths and interests and using the tool as a partner to help you grow and improve rather than as a substitute to do the work for you.
Carl Jung once said, "The psychological rule says that when an inner situation is not made conscious, it happens outside, as fate."
AI, in a way, can act as a mirror, reflecting aspects of yourself that you may not have noticed. By working with it thoughtfully, you gain insights into your strengths, preferences, and areas for growth. For example, the more I engage with AI, the more I recognize the joy I find in asking questions and idea generation—and the frustration I feel when bogged down by details.
Using AI effectively begins with self-awareness. The more you understand the skills you enjoy using, your personality, and your values, the better equipped you are to guide AI in a way that benefits you. To make this practical, here are a few prompts you can try:
For improving writing:
· "What are three ways to rephrase this paragraph while keeping a reflective tone?"
· "Identify areas in my writing where my tone feels less authentic or overly formal."
For career planning:
· "Based on my skills and values, suggest potential career paths I may not have considered."
For self-awareness:
· "What personality traits are evident in how I structure my writing or ideas?"
For brainstorming ideas:
· "Generate a list of potential blog topics around AI, creativity, and personal growth."
Ultimately, tools like AI can free us from tasks that drain our energy, allowing us to focus on what we enjoy and what aligns with our authentic selves. By leveraging AI thoughtfully, we can find more meaning and satisfaction in our work and lives.
Using these tools effectively is more than just productivity; it's about creating space for creativity, joy, and authenticity. What tasks could AI make more manageable for you so you can focus on what truly brings you happiness? Try it out and see where it takes you.
Next time, I'd like to explore the role values play in finding meaning and how understanding them can deepen our connection to the work we do and the lives we live.
